July 2012
To all the Zonal Units/Standing
Committee (GI):
Dear Comrades,
AIIEA
CONDEMNS FOISTING OF FALSE CASES BY THE WEST BENGAL GOVERNMENT ON THE FUNCTIONARIES
OF OUR UNITS AT KOLKATA
Working Class across the country participated in the nationwide strike
on the 28th February 2012. As per the call of the AIIEA the
insurance employees throughout the country joined the strike in a massive way. In
Kolkata the strike was successfully observed by the LIC and PS General
Insurance employees.
On the day of the strike, before the Ruby House in Kolkata, where the
offices of National Insurance Co., were situated, Com. Pradip Basak, Working
Committee Member of AIIEA and Com. Dhanunjay Banerjee, President of West Bengal
State General Insurance Employees’ Association were leading the strike
rally. While the striking employees were
peacefully appealing to the others also to join the strike, Police came and
entered into an argument with our comrades.
Finally the strike rally concluded successfully.
While this happened on 28th February 2012, a sudden
development took place on 27th June 2012 when it came to the notice
of our comrades that arrest warrants were issued against these two comrades.
Various charges were levied against them and with an allegation that these two were
absconding, arrest warrants were obtained against them.
Com. Basak comes from a very well-known family and his house is known
across the whole locality. Com. Dhunanjay Banerjee is a serving employee and
attends office regularly and attends to the trade union activity. While they
were available for any enquiry, Police did not even bother to enquire with them
and simply filed the charges including the allegation that they were
absconding. All this is seemingly done
to create a panic and scare among the employees who went on strike inspite of
the open posture taken by the West Bengal Chief Minister against the strike.
This is how trade union rights are being trampled in West Bengal under
the current dispensation. Our
organisation is taking all steps to defend these comrades.
Bail applications were moved
and bail was granted by the Court to Com. Basak and Com. Dhunanjay Banerjee. The Criminal charges are still being pursued
but these comrades are standing firm and are not intimidated by these actions.
Our units at Kolkata are taking all steps to stand up to these intimidatory
tactics.
AIIEA condemns the attack on the trade union rights and stands by the
comrades who are working for the trade union under the present circumstances in
West Bengal.
Comradely yours,
Sd. K.Venugopal
General Secretary.
