Message of Solidarity of WFTU with Trade Unions of India
on Day of strike February 23, 2011
On behalf of the 80 million members of the World Federation of Trade Unions in 120 countries in five continents we send you warm militant class oriented greetings and internationalist solidarity on February 23, Day of strike and action of the working class and the people of India, we welcome the millions of your people who led the militant unions in your struggle against the anti-popular and anti-labor policies of the Government of India.
We convey a very warm message of struggle by the people and workers of Greece at the initiative and the leadership of PAME which has declared February 23 as a Day of general Strike to state once more their resistance to the cruel and unpopular anti-worker policies of the government and the European Union.
We express our support with the class oriented militant trade unions of India which prepared and organized this national strike and demand implementation of their basic rights and satisfaction of the contemporary demands of people against the increasing prices of basic foodstuffs, the violation of labor laws, the lack of health and safety measures, the violation of social security, against the privatization of sectors of vital importance against unemployment and poverty.
The eyes and the attention of all workers are turned to the "March to the Parliament" which will be one of the largest demonstrations in the history of the working class and of the movement of India. The unity of the struggle on September 7, 2010, Day of Strike which coincided with the International Day of Action of WFTU inspired the working people to move to this new initiative and to respond en masse to the call of your unions since the talks with the government on labor issues and social insurance have failed.
We declare once more our solidarity with the working class of Tunisia, Egypt, Algeria, Yemen, Bahrain, Jordan and Libya, which demonstrate the irresistible power of people fighting and reveal the role of imperialism, of NATO, U.S.A and EU policies to create mass poverty, destitution of the people, persecution of trade unionists and economic migrants.
The WFTU is confident that the general strike would be a springboard for even stronger events. Through these struggles, the Working class will understand that the future cannot be capitalism and that the future can only be improved through the elimination of exploitation of man by man.
Within this climate, the 16th World Trade Union Congress which takes place on 6-10 April 2011 in Athens Greece will be a milestone for the international class oriented trade union movement and will mark new struggles for a world without injustice, poverty and wars.
